With the fifth and final season of Netflix The Last Kingdom almost here, fans are wondering exactly what we can expect from the (almost) final chapter in the story of Uhtred son of Uhtred. Season 4 was more than eventful, with war, plague and murder in the kingdoms of Wessex and Mercia, and despite everything, our hero had still not fulfilled the destiny of reclaiming his home in Bebbanburg.
Filming for the season wrapped some time ago; it started as early as November 2020 at Korda Studios in Hungary. COVID-19 has severely disrupted production and Netflix has yet to reveal an official release date although the show is apparently ready to go. Most expect the season to drop between April and May.
Alexander Dreymon as Uhtred, Millie Brady as Aethelflaed, Eliza Butterworth as Aelswith, Timothy Innes as King Edward, Emily Cox as Brida and Jeppe Beck Laursen as Haesten will return to the series.
where we went The Last Kingdom
The truce reached between King Edward of Wessex, Queen Aethelflaed of Mercia, and Sigtrygrr of Ireland will be important throughout Season 5 as various forces seek to upset the balance. Sigtrygrr is supported by Brida, who – embittered by her experiences as a slave in Wales – has unfortunately turned against Uhtred. The cost of the truce is high: Sigtrygrr receives Eoforwik (York), a city that Aethelflaed had taken from the Danes. He is also engaged to Uhtred’s daughter, Stiorra, who is willingly used as a bargaining chip as she had fallen in love with the Dane.
Meanwhile, Aethelhelm continues his plot against Edward’s firstborn, Aethelstan, and goes so far as to attempt murder by having Edward’s mother, Aelswith, poisoned. His life was on the line at the end of the final season.
Edward’s other son is also about to have a life-changing experience. Edward assigned Uhtred to take the boy, train him to be a warrior, and educate him in everything he needs to know about the Danes. While Young Uhtred is devoted to the church and Stiorra to Sigtrygrr, Uhtred will apparently be devoted to the future king.
What to expect in The Last Kingdom season 5
While there haven’t been many plot details revealed for the upcoming season, we can make some educated guesses. We are working on what has already happened in season 4, the actual historical events and, above all, the original Saxon stories novels by British novelist Bernard Cornwall from which the show is adapted. Season 5 will be based on books 9 and 10, storm warriors and The Flame Bearer.
While a lot was cut from the books due to time constraints and other reasons, the series remains relatively faithful to them, so this is our best guide to what’s to come.
That said, from now on we’ll get into SPOILERS for The Last Kingdom season 5, so only click if you know what you’re getting into:
