Small and Penobscot Books launch new novel

by Rosemary Wyman

At the Wilson Museum’s Hutchins Education Center on November 18, Castine author Don Small made his debut with Margaret — A Novel, recently published by Penobscot Books.

Small detailed the story of the novel’s genesis and read several chapters. Set in Castine and chronicling the lives of fictional characters Margaret, her husband, their family and friends, this is the first novel published by Penobscot Books. Margaret portrays a rich and precise setting of a group of people, places and activities in Castine that is in line with Penobscot Books’ commitment to publish books by Maine authors that celebrate the uniqueness of this region.

Author Bary Lyon Terry’s novel was published posthumously thanks to the painstaking and thoughtful work of her surviving husband, Don. Bary had completed his first draft of Margaret before his death in 2000 and recently Don made the decision to bring his novel to life by writing with his voice as he revised his manuscript and added a missing chapter.

Royalties from Margaret’s sale go to the Maine Community Foundation’s Bary Lyon Small Fund, which supports innovative educational programs in Maine.
