In celebration of its 10th anniversary, Bermuda’s international long-term insurers and reinsurers [BILTIR] donated 750 books to P4 students across the island.
A spokesperson said: “The books – ‘The Magic School Bus Takes a Risk’ – have been provided to students to introduce the concepts of probability, risk and actuary. The books were written in conjunction with the American Academy of Actuaries.
“The distribution of the book was kicked off via a live virtual event hosted by Planet Math, a Bermuda-based tutoring service established in 2016 to help students improve their math skills.
“Bermuda P4 students have been invited to join a Zoom presentation on Tuesday, December 14th. The presentation included two custom-written eye-catching probability songs and videos that can be viewed here and here.
“Two math superheroes, Math Man and Division Diva, played a coin toss game with the students so they could experiment with the odds.
“They were joined by Taiyana Allen, recipient of a $ 30,000 BILTIR scholarship to study data analysis and actuarial science at Georgia State University. Taiyana, who now works as an actuarial analyst at Wilton Re, explained the role actuaries play in assessing probabilities in the life reinsurance industries in Bermuda. She told the students that there was a huge need for actuaries in Bermuda. The superheroes then shared their favorite part of the Magic School Bus book.
“BILTIR represents 63 long-term insurance, reinsurance and services companies in Bermuda that provide life insurance and annuity products and employ more than 600 people on the island. “
Education Minister Diallo Rabain said: “In Bermuda we have international business partners like BILTIR who are truly committed to helping our communities thrive and prosper. International business offers fantastic career opportunities in Bermuda. I hope these books provided by BILTIR enhance the pleasure of reading and help persuade some of these young students to join the industry.
Amy Ponnampalam, CEO of Athora Life Re Ltd. and Chair of BILTIR’s Social Impact Committee, said: “We are delighted to be able to help our students develop the math skills that will be so important to them throughout their lives. One of BILTIR’s main goals is to support educational causes in the community, and we hope that some of the students using the book will become the next generation of Bermuda life and reinsurance professionals.
“Planet Math has been a fantastic partner for BILTIR in this initiative. It is truly inspiring to see their talent and dedication in harnessing the commitment of these young children to get them excited about math from an early age.
Taiyana Allen said, “I was fortunate enough to have a BILTIR scholarship to study in the United States which allowed me to work in the life reinsurance industry here in Bermuda. Special thanks to BILTIR President Sylvia Oliveira for continuing to include me in these amazing events.
“The life industry offers an extremely exciting opportunity as well as a rewarding career, and I hope that some of the students receiving these books will one day be future colleagues in the life industry here in Bermuda.”
Sergio Pitcher of Planet Math said, “Planet Math was created to help our students improve their math skills and this wonderful gift from BILTIR is a massive contribution to this mission. Our main goal this year and for years to come is to raise funds to provide one-to-one lessons to over 200 students, twice a week for a full school year.
“Covid-19 has had a major impact on student learning over the past two years and we want to help as many young people as possible. Our program will help close the learning gap that has only grown over the past two years. This initiative requires substantial funding and working with BILTIR on this “Magic School Bus” launch is a first step towards raising funds for the tutoring initiative.
